Mrs. Claudia Isabel Atkins Vernon, 93, of 201 Dahl Street, died on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 12, at the Chapel of Ray Funeral Home with Reverend Tim Byerly and Bishop Graham Rights officiating. Interment will follow in the Trent Family Cemetery.

Mrs. Vernon was born on June 2, 1915, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Sam Wesley Atkins and the late Annie Regania Carter Atkins. She was formerly employed with Washington Mills and was a retired caregiver. She was a member of Mayodan Moravian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest "Buster" Vernon; sisters, Titia Carter, Ethel Manuel, Oddie Dalton, and Ila Farmer; and brothers, Clint Atkins, James Atkins, and Sam Atkins.

She is survived by her daughter, Frankie Bowlin and husband, Aubrey of Stoneville; sons, Tony Vernon of Kernersville and James Vernon and wife, Millie of Enterprise, Ala.; five grandchildren, Michael Bowlin and wife, Candy, Timothy Vernon and wife, Shelia, Christy Smith and husband, Greg, Jim Vernon, and Connie Vernon; five great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
