Virgil S. "Virg" Summers, 86, of Altoona died Thursday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born in Henrietta, son of the late John and Margaret (Latshaw) Summers. He married Debbie M. Carles June 13, 1981, in Altoona. He is survived by his children: Diane A. Summers of Altoona, Michele L. Freet and husband, Garth, of Altoona and Kim L. Gailey and husband, Ed, of Bellwood; grandchildren: Joshua Freet, Nathan Freet, Olivia Gailey and Isaiah Freet; and daughter-by-heart, Alice M. Bender of Altoona. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Nicholas Gailey. Virg retired from Fisher Auto Parts as the warehouse manager. He previously was self-employed as a bread man. He was a graduate of Altoona High School. Virg was a WWII Navy veteran, seaman 2nd class, serving on the USS San Jacinto. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, exercising, playing tennis, swimming and reading. Virg formerly was a member of Portage Lodge F&AM; Jaffa Shrine, where he was active in the Chanters; Disabled American Veterans and Silver Sneakers at The Summit. He was in the Active Program through Penn State University and enjoyed watching Penn State football and singing. Friends will be received from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, and 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Jon Neely officiating. Interment will be held at Alto Reste Park with military honors.
