Adele "Del" Smith died on May 15, 2006 after a long and trying illness.

She was born in Charleston on June 16, 1921 to the late Frank Goldsby Stevens of Augusta, Georgia and Agnes Matthews Stevens of Charleston.

She graduated from James Simmons High School in Charleston and Winthrop College with a BA in English.

She did her part for WWII by working at the Port of Embarkation in North Charleston from 1942 to 1945 and subsequently in the War Department in Washington, DC.

"Miss Adele" was retired from the Financial Services business in Charleston where she was a familiar figure on upper King Street and was a friend to all who passed her way. In her retirement she was employed by the Screen Actors Guild to appear in selected commercials for Cotton Inc.

She lived since 1952 in the same home on Atlantic Street in Mt. Pleasant where she was known as "The Cookie Lady" by the neighborhood children.

She was a long time member of Christ Our King Parish and Stella Maris before that.

She is survived by a son, William F. Smith, III of Charleston; a granddaughter, Diana A. Smith, MD of Charlottesville, Virginia; great- granddaughter, Amy M. Sluss of Wheatland, Wyoming and friends of over 70 years.

A graveside service will be held at 2PM on Thursday, May 18th at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, 29464.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, N. Charleston, SC, 29406, would be appreciated. The Smith family is being served by McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant.

She is now free to walk with her lifetime of dogs and play with her cats and crab on the beach and ride her bike and be with her God forever. Thanks, Mom, for everything.
