MARY RATHBONE ACKER, age 74, died December 18, 2008 in Tucson AZ. She was born July 10, 1934 in Detroit MI to Richmond John and Marybelle Crow Rathbone. She was a graduate of Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, OH and attended the University of Colorado where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She graduated from Vassar College and married Peter H. Acker in 1956. Mary and Peter raised their family in Chesterland, OH before retiring to Sequim, WA. Mary was a devoted mother of three, a substitute teacher and then volunteered in classrooms in her retirement. Mary was very interested in genealogy and published a book, My Dearest Anna, of the history of the Richmond Family.

Mary was the longest living survivor of an autologous bone marrow transplant, a result of her treatment for leukemia diagnosed in 1987.

Following Peter's death in 1993, she enjoyed spending winters in Green Valley, AZ with her friend and companion, Bill Wallace, who also preceded her in death in January 2008. Mary was an avid bird-watcher, gardener, and lover of nature. She was an active member of the Klahhane Hiking Club in Sequim and the Friends of Madera Canyon in Green Valley. She is survived by her three children, Jamie M. Acker (Alice), Eric S. Acker (Brenda), and Susannah Acker Dyson (William) and six grandchildren. At her request, there will be no services. Mary's ashes will be scattered in the Olympic Mountains where she loved to hike and backpack. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (www.fhcrc.org) or a donation of a book to a local library.
