DEATHS.
HALLIGAN.
J. J. Halligan, of the DeKalb Hardware company, died July 10, at his home in DeKalb, Mo., at the age of 78 years. The funeral was held at the Baptist church at Effingham on the 13th of July and interment was made at that place.

John J. Halligan, one of the early settlers in this community, and a man who did not have an enemy in a community in which he lived for forty years, died at DeKalb, Mo. At half past eight Monday night. The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church in DeKalb by Rev. R. S. Cook and the burial will be at Forest Grove cemetery this afternoon. The remains will arrive in Effingham at 11:40 a.m., and after getting dinner the friends will proceed to the cemetery for the interment.
The deceased was born in Mercer county, Kentucky, May 3, 1827. He came to DeKalb, Mo., in the early 50's and farmed and worked at the carpenter's trade. In 1859 he moved to the Halligan farm four miles north of Effingham where he lived until the death of his wife eight years ago. He was married to Mary Morris, who was the mother of all his children. In 1857. Five years ago he married Mrs. M. W. King, of DeKalb, and has made his home in that town every since. Mr. Halligan became a member of the Baptist church when he was a young man and died a member of that church. He was a charter member of the Masonic lodge, of Huron, when it was located at Old Huron and was a member in good standing of MacKay lodge, No. 48, of Effingham. He enlisted in the 13th regiment during the Civil war but was discharged on account of disabilities. T. F. Cook, of this city, was his bunkmate. Mr. Halligan was a man who always worked for peace in his community and was noted for his fairness, and even temper. He lived and died at just and upright man before God and his fellow-man. His children are O. M. Halligan, of Atchison, J. M. Halligan of Eden, J. R. Halligan, of Cottonwood Falls and Mrs. C. A. Ayers, of Horton.
