He died in southern Iraq of injuries sustained when part of the road collapsed and his humvee rolled into a water filled canal. At the age of 17, Stephen tired of high school and was tired of being chubby. He decided to join the Army and before enlisting, he shed 100 pounds in five months. Wearing a backpack loaded with rocks and repeating exercises used in the "The Biggest Loser" were his exercises of choice. He felt it was his duty to fight in Iraq and told his mom, "I need to go over there and take care of things, because if I don't, who else will?" Stephen was an outstanding soldier who volunteered to man the machine gun on top of his humvee – this is a dangerous position to be in because it put him as the first target in a firefight. On January 15, he was due to return home for his mid-tour leave but his family last spoke to him on December 17. Stephen had called home to check on his father who was ill and had been hospitalized. He told his mom, "Mom, if I ever don't come back, you know I will always be with you, and I will be with Jesus, and I will be fine." Stephen was a wonderful man and quite a jokester who loved "M.A.S.H.", video games, artillery and girls. On a quiz he filled out for his personal web page, there were two questions that are especially poignant at this sad time.
