HUGH B. GEARIN DIES IN ARIZONA
Marion County man Leaves Widow and Eight Children; Aunt in Salem
Hugh R. Gearin, an Oregon pioneer, of St. Paul, Marion county, died Sunday at Tucson, Ariz., from tuberculosis. Deceased, who was a brother of former United States Senator John M. Gearin of Portland, leaves a widow and eight children. Senator Gearin returned from Arizona Sunday, after taking his brother to Tucson, and almost as soon as he arrived he was handed a message telling of his brother's death. The remains will be brought to Woodburn by Mrs. Gearin and interment will be at St. Paul, Saturday.
Hugh B. Gearin was born in Indiana, October 9, 1849, coming to Oregon with his parents when quite young. He has been living in the vicinity of St. Paul until recently, when he went to Arizona, occupying the old donation land claim taken up by his parents. Mr. Gearin was one of the most highly respected citizens of his community, keeping open house to all who passed his way, where there was food and shelter for any traveler. His generous and warm hospitality was known wherever his name was mentioned. Mr. Gearin was the unfailing advisor and assistant to all of his neighbors who applied to him, and his death will be mourned by all who knew him.
He was a nephew of Mrs. D. F. Wagner of this city.
