Gene Phillips, 78 of Springdale died December 24, 2008 at his home. He was born September 21, 1930 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Lonnie S. and Pearl Hewitt Phillips.
He retired from Jones Truck Lines as Manager of the Interline Department in 1991 after 29 years of service. He also worked with his father as a realtor for the Ozark Land Company from 1960 – 1967. He was a Staff Sgt. in the United States Air Force from January 1951 to December 1954 during the Korean War. He was an Eagle Scout and a former Scout Master of Troop 112. He graduated from Springdale High School in 1948. He attended College of the Ozarks where he lettered in football from 1948 to 1950. He also attended the University of Arkansas in 1955.
He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Springdale. He enjoyed fishing and traveling and was an avid Razorback Football and Basketball fan. Most of all he loved his family.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Marion Juanita Phillips, Martha Helen Munson and Katherine Marie Largent.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years Wilma Phillips of the home ; one son Michael Phillips of Lowell; three daughters Ginger Bickerton Sampson of Seattle, Washington, Lisa Carlin of Westlake Village, California and Sherri Payne of Clarksville; ten grandchildren, one great granddaughter , two nephews and two nieces.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale with Rev. Charlie Foster officiating. Burial will be in the Bluff Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4pm at the funeral home.
