Mary Polly Oliver was the daughter of Richard Oliver. She married Daniel McDonald when she was 15 and he 58. She was his 2nd wife. When Daniel passed away at age 79, their children were ages 4 through 19. Daniel left land to their youngest son, John Oliver McDonald, as a 'special gift' for John to look after Polly. In her later years, she is found living with her oldest son, Daniel Oliver McDonald, and his family. Her occupation is shown as midwife. She never remarried.

Daniel and Polly had five children: Daniel Oliver, William Alexander, John Oliver, Catherine and Abigail. Polly also raised a sixth child, Mary Johnson, who was Daniel's daughter with Isabel Johnson. William and Catherine moved to Clarke County, Alabama, in the late 1850s.

Mary Polly Oliver is found in historical records as either Mary Oliver, Polly Oliver, Polly McDonald or Mary McDonald. After Daniel's death, she is sometimes found under her maiden name of Oliver. Her tombstone reads "Mary McDonald".

Daniel is buried at McDonald's Chapel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Moore County NC, between Foxfire and Pinehurst. In 1842 that was the family's burying ground. It is also said to be the site of the original McDonald homesite following the family's emigration from Scotland.
