OBITUARY :
A WELL KNOWN ROARING SPRING CITIZEN PASSES AWAY.

PETER KURTZ, one of the village's most exemplary citizens, closed his life on Monday last. He was of German descent, his great grandfather emigrated from the "Fatherland" and located in Lancaster county, where he died, living to a good old age. The grandfather of Peter Kurtz was born in Lancaster Co., and had four sons: Jacob, Abram, Samuel, and Isaac. Peter was the son of Abram, who moved to Huntingdon county about the year 1834, and married Esther Showalter of the same county. To these parents were born six sons and three daughters: Jacob of Pittsburg; Abram, who died in Kansas about 4 years ago; Peter, of Roaring Spring, (now deceased); Isaac, of Kansas, a Methodist minister; Samuel, deceased; and Joseph of Altoona; Susan, married to Mr. Kyler, of Huntingdon county, both deceased; Nancy, married to Mr. Green, of Kansas; and Catharine, married to Henry Houston of East Freedom.

The subject of this sketch was born in Huntingdon county, January 8th, 1839, and was aged 60 years, 9 months and 28 days.

On December 15, 1864, he married Susan Hainly, daughter of Christian and Barbara Hainly of East Sharpsburg, Blair county and first located in East Freedom; subsequently he moved to Missouri, where he resided four years, when he moved to Roaring Spring and spent the balance of his life as a faithful, honest man. Four children were born to this union: Lizzie, married to Andrew S. Snowberger of this place; Nelson, who died in infancy; Charles of Pittsburg, and Harry at home.

It may be well said of Peter Kurtz, he was a man in whom there was no guile. At the age of fifteen years he identified himself with the M. E. church and for 45 years was a consistent, devoted, Christian man, always at his post, defending his Master. Being a lover of song, he was connected with the choir for many years, and as a token of respect, the choir presented a beautiful floral wreath. He was not a man of the world; but the sanctity of home and the sanctuary of God were uppermost during his life. Kind and devoted to his wife and children, faithful to his employer and as honest as steel. The church has lost a prop, the mother a good husband, and the children a kind father. Thus after toiling for many years, and a faithful servant of his Master, the Divine voice has said, "It is enough. Come up higher."

On Thursday morning, Nov. 9, the last rites were held over his remains. His pastor, Rev. Wallace, conducted the fun-rites, and now in the cemetery on the hill, sleeps the remains of Peter Kurtz, awaiting the resurrection morn. Peace to his ashes.
