William enlisted at age 17 into the US Army as a volunteer on November 8, 1949, giving 1932 as his year of birth.

He was killed in action in South Korea.

Private First Class Gordon was a member of the 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy near Hoengsong, South Korea on February 13, 1951. Private First Class Gordon was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
