Entered into eternal rest on the morning of February 25, 2008, The Rev. Dr. Ralph A. Cannon, husband of Mildred Bowers Cannon. Residence, Charleston, SC. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 28, 2008 at one o'clock at Bethel United Methodist Church. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Church Fellowship Hall. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery at three-thirty o'clock. The Rev. Cannon was born March 5, 1929 in Spartanburg, SC, the son of John Burns Cannon and Eulalie Earle Cannon. He was a 1950 graduate of Wofford College and Yale Divinity School in 1953. Rev. Cannon was a member of the SC Conference since 1953, serving appointments in Chesnee, Spartanburg, Bethune, Mt. Pleasant, Darlington, Sumter, Rock Hill, Camden and Greenville. He was a Trustee with the SC United Methodist Advocate, Past Chairperson of Board of Education; Registrar, Board of Ministry; Treasurer and Section Leader, Board of Christian Social Concerns; Trustee, Spartanburg Methodist College; Chairperson, Claflin Campaign. Also past co-chairman of the SC Christian-Jewish Committee; President of SC Christian Action Council; and President of Ministerial Associations. He was an instructor and leader in the fields of Christian Education, social ethics, race relations, world peace, United Methodism, Theology, and Bible Interpretation. Rev. Cannon has written for Christian Century, Methodist curriculum resources, and the General Board of Temperance, receiving a special citation in 1958. He also wrote regular columns for The SC United Methodist Advocate. He was six times an elected delegate to General and Jurisdictional Conferences in 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1992. He is survived by his wife of Charleston, SC; two daughters, Cynthia Cannon Poindexter of Peekskill, NY and Teresa Lynn Cannon of Lumberton, NC; one son, Jeffrey Morris Cannon of Durham, NC. Memorials may be made to 1953 Divinity Scholarship, Yale University Divinity School, 409 Prospect Street, New Haven, CT 06511, or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by J.
