W. Whitaker dies at 70
Willard P. Whitaker Jr., 70, died early today at the Jefferson County Hospital. He had been ill the past few months.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Behner Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. Wayne L. Bartruff. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery at Ottumwa. Memorials to the first United Methodist church or Cancer Society.
Whitaker was born April 1, 1909 in Jefferson County, the son of Willard F. and Elaine Bevring Whitaker. He married Kathryn McElroy October 10, 1937 in Ottumwa. He was shop foreman for the Burlington Transportation of Ottumwa, Merchant's Motor Freight of Des Moines and Watson Brother's Fairfield. He also remodeled and built homes.
The family home is at 602 South D in Fairfield. He had lived in this community since 1948.
Surviving are his wife, one son, Willard F. Whitaker III, Diamond Bar, California; one granddaughter; two sisters, Mildren Guier, Ottumwa, and Virginia Parsons, Gladbrook and one brother, John Paul Whitaker of Red Bluff, Calif.
The family visitation will be Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m.
Memorial: to his church or American Cancer Society.
Burial: Green Hills section, Lot 352.
