Memorial Service: 2:00 PM, Friday, August 29, 2008 at Lauderdale Memorial Park, 2001 SW 4th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Ruth L. McNeece, of Lecanto, died August 17, 2008. She was born February 23, 1914 in Fort Lauderdale, FL to Harry and Geneva (Lowe) Raulerson. Her large and loving family was the source of happiness and strength throughout her long life.

She was a true Florida native, born into old lines of Bahamian/Key West salvagers, cattlemen and produce farmers. Mrs. McNeece knew Ivy Stranahan, widow of the man who opened the first trading post in what became Fort Lauderdale, as well as Annie of the Seminole Nation. As a child, her parents and older sisters might find her with her beloved brother Bruce playing at the edge of the New River or otherwise getting into mischief together. At an older age, the two siblings would board the famous Flagler train and ride south to Key West; from there they would catch a steamship to Cuba to visit their parents while their father was employed as a ship's engineer in the Havana harbor. She attended high school in both Havana and Fort Lauderdale. Since her parents and older sisters were among the several hundred residents of Fort Lauderdale when it was incorporated in 1911, Mrs. McNeece attended the annual Fort Lauderdale Pioneer dinner for many years. She moved to Lake Placid, FL in 1980 and relocated to Citrus County in 2000 to be near family.

Mrs. McNeece was preceded in death by her husband Richard H. McNeece. She is survived by her loving family including two children: Richard A. (Mary) McNeece of Grand Rapids, MI and Judith A. (Bruce) McDonell of Columbus, GA; three grandchildren: Pamela M. (Christopher) Mottram of Avondale Estates, GA, Mark A. (Noel) McDonell of Tampa, FL and Susan R. McNeece of Berkeley, CA; three great-grandchildren: Stephen R. Mottram, Sarah R. Mottram and Grace A. McDonell, and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Citrus County, P.O. Box 641270, Beverly Hills, FL 34464.
