Obituary carried in the Buffalo Reflex, Buffalo, MO, 10 May 1882:
"Died at his home, 2 miles NW of Louisburg, Dallas Co., MO on Thursday, the 4th inst., Mr. G.W. Bottoms. Mr Bottoms was a native of Tennessee, being born in Roan(sic) County, that state, on the 25th day of April 1826, which makes him 56 yrs., and 9 days old at the time of his death. Mr. Bottoms was married to Miss Matilda Hale in August 1852. He emigrated to Missouri in 1856...a warm advocate of and soldier of the Union cause...His disease was some disorder of the throat...ulcerated cancer of the throat...His bereaved widow and children (of whom there are ten, two of whom are the only young ones, a boy and girl, aged respectively 10 and 7 yrs) seem completely broken down...He was buried on the 6th inst. in the Louisburg Cemetery."
