George was a son of Conrad Frederick BEST and Mary "Polly" HENNEBERGER. He married Elizabeth WHEALEN on 7 February 1839. "Between Cisne and Mt. Erie, IL stands the old brick house (1964) built by George BEST in 1853. It not only was built by him but he built the kiln and made the brick. It is still being lived in and appears to be in good condition." - from a family history compiled by Howard G. ORR in the 1960's. From an obituary in the Wayne Co. Press Feb. 3, 1870: "Sudden death on Sunday evening last, Mr. George Best, of the vicinity of Mt. Erie, after returning from church was seized with a violent fit of coughing, during which he ruptured a blood vessel and died almost instantly. Mr. Best was about 50 years of age--during the war was Lieutenant in the 63rd Regiment, Ill. Vol., was a well known and highly respected citizen."
