General Selden was educated in the public schools and academy in Jamestown. N. Y., and at Professor Russell's private school in New Haven, Conn. He then became bookkeeper and teller in the Chautauqua County Bank, in Jamestown and remained there until 1862.

Selden E. Marvin was a 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant in the 112th New York Volunteer Infantry, which was organized in September 1862, at Jamestown, New York. He was promoted to Major on 27 August 1863, and served as the Assistant Paymaster of the U.S. Army. On 14 December 1866, he was appointed Adjutant General of the State of New York. He reorganized and reformed the National Guard.
