from Alexandra Montgomery:
William O'Hara Martin was one of western Nevada's most outstanding figures, and
contributed greatly to its development. He came to Nevada as a young man in
1868, and lived in Ormsby County until he moved to Reno in 1881 with his family.
He started the Reno Mercantile Company, which operated from 1895 until 1970 and
became one of Nevada's oldest and most profitable institutions.

Mr. Martin was a man of unquestioned probity and strong convictions. His
first-rate business judgement and fine measure of responsibility made him an
excellent president of the Washoe County Bank and the Riverside Milling Company.
He served in the state senate from Ormsby County from 1877 until 1881, and until
his death in 1901, he took an active interest in public affairs.

The Center Street Bridge in Reno, Nevada was dedicated to William O'Hara Martin
on August 16, 1939, and a plaque bearing his name was displayed there until the
bridge was demolished and replaced in 1998.
