John "Hap" Shields, Sr. served in the Marines from 1954 until 1957, where he was a boxer. He married the former Carol Avellone in San Diego in 1957. He had owned Shields and Sons Custom Slaughter and was a butcher from Glicks Meat Market for 39 years.

He was a Boy Scoutmaster and a Y Indian Guide. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the N.R.A. and the North American Hunting Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Tony Shields of Ivanhoe; two daughters, Connie S. Shannon and Karen Norman of Visalia; a sister Beverly Guido of Visalia; and six grandchildren. A son, John Shields, Jr., preceded him in death.
