Thomas J. Roberts was born in Ohio, probably in Madison Twp., Jackson County, where his family is living in the 1860 and 1870 census records.

His father's name was John Roberts. He died prior to the 1860 census, and the family does not appear in the 1850 census because they did not come to this country until after 1851, when Thomas's sister, Miriam was born in Wales.

His mother's maiden name was Margaret "W" Ferris. "W" likely stood for Winnefred, the name of one of her two daughters. Thomas had three younger siblings:

Miriam, b. 1851 Wales
John W., b. 1852 Colorado (?)
Winnefred, b. 1855 Ohio

Miriam died or was married between 1860 and 1870.
John W. died sometime after the 1880 census.
Winnefred married in about 1879.

Thomas's mother, Margaret, married her second husband, Daniel H. Lewis, on September 8, 1860 in Jackson County, Ohio. He had previously been married to Mary (Price) Lewis, who died sometime between 1854 and 1860, probably in Ohio. Daniel, originally from Llanegwad, Carmarthen, Wales, had 6 children with his first wife.

Margaret and Daniel had only one child from this second marriage (for each of them.) Her name was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jane Lewis, born in February of 1866 in Ohio. In 1930, Thomas is found living with half sister Lizzie's family at 518 Corona Street in Denver. He must have died shortly after that census record was reported.

He is buried with his half-sister's son, Evan and Evan's second wife Bessie.

During his lifetime, Thomas worked as a farmer and a gold miner. He was married twice. His first wife, whose name we do not know, he married sometime in 1880. They had one son, John T. Roberts, born January 1881 in either Ohio or Colorado.

In 1897, Thomas married a "Martha J." born Feb 1848 in West Virginia. They are living in the Oak Hill area of Jackson County, Ohio in 1900, which is where his mother is also living at the time.

I was unable to find Thomas in the 1910 and 1920 census records, but by 1930 he is reporting that he is a widower.
