Captain Cornwell was one of the 35 men of the 66th Regiment killed on that day during the Battle at Richmond.
When a member of his Masonic Lodge, J. C. Voyles, visited the battle site in November 1862, he reported, "I visited the battle field on the 21st day of November and found that the bodies had been buried so near the surface that hogs had disintered them and so mutilated their bodies that they could not be recognized."
Within five years after the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox, Virginia, on 9 April 1865, a vast reburial program had been completed...At Camp Nelson National Cemetery, in only two months, June and July of 1868, a total of 2,023 dead were removed from five areas of Kentucky and reburied there. It is thought that the body of Charles Cornwell is among those buried here.
