Born in Parkersburg. West Virginia, Judge Coles attended the University of Virginia and then the law school of Washington University, from which he obtained his degree in 1889. He was admitted to the bar in the same year and for four years prior to his appointment as Referee in Bankruptcy, was Assistant United States District Attorney. He was appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court in January 1935 to fill the vacancy created when John Fitzsimmons died. He resigned in September of that same year due to ill health.

He served as Referee in Bankruptcy for more than 35 years before resigning on February 1, 1934 and became nationally known as an authority on bankruptcy law. He had been appointed July 1, 1898, the day President McKinley signed the national bankruptcy act.
