He was born March 1, 1908 in Logan, UT, to Martha Sorensen and Peter Affleck. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His earliest employment was with Western Union as a messenger boy, later becoming a telegrapher station manager.
At age 34 he began a career in Casper, WY, working for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph, later named US West, from which he retired at age 65.
During John's 60 years in Casper he was a member of the Casper Masonic Lodge #15. He served as Past Master York Rite, Illustrious Master of the Wyoming Council #1 Cryptic Masons, Eminent Commander and Apolo Commandery #8 Knights Templar. He was a member of the Korein Shrine Temple and Capital Chapter #8 Royal Arch Masons in the capacity of Excellent High Priest.
John is preceded in death by two sons, John Stavrin, Leland Peter; and his wife of 73 years, Elma Cartwright and 5 grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Larry (Twila) and Richard (Susan); and a daughter, Susan Schumacher (Robert); 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at the Taylorsville Valley Park LDS Church building, 2603 West 4700 South, Taylorsville, UT 84118 at 10 a.m. with a viewing one hour prior to the service.
John's interment will be at the Logan City Cemetery, Logan, UT.
