Neil H. Sorensen, 85, passed away on December 29, 2008 at his home in Mayfield.


He was born September 4, 1923 in Bingham, Utah to Nels A. and Gladys Christensen Sorensen. He married Mary Louise Munk on May 22, 1946 in the Manti LDS Temple. Neil graduated from Manti High School and attended USU, studying airplane mechanics. He spent a year in Puerto Rico as a mechanic before enlisting in the Army Air Force. After his military service, he returned to Utah State for a year and then returned to Mayfield where he has been involved with farming and ranching ever since.


He was active in the Sanpete Cattlemen's Association where in 1982 was chosen as the "King Cowboy". He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, where he received a distinguished service award. He loved being in the outdoors and enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing and boating with his family and friends. He has served on the Mayfield Town Board, the water board and has fulfilled many church assignments. Neil and Mary Louise spent two summers as Service Missionaries at Cove Fort.


He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise; children, Linda (Que) Miller, Lee (Tina) Sorensen, Kent (Denice) Sorensen, Kim Sorensen, all from Mayfield; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Mellor of Fayette, Glenna (Glade) Peterson of Murray, Joyce (Robert) Graham of Salt Lake City. Preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ann; grandson, Kole Caskey and brother-in-law, Max Mellor.


Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 12:00 Noon in the Mayfield LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call at the Mayfield Chapel on Friday evening from 6 to 8 and again on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.
Burial will be in the Mayfield Cemetery with Full Military Honors accorded by the Oliver- Russell American Legion Post # 105.
