Loyal met and fell in love with Elizabeth Stoneburner daughter of Arthur Elmer Stoneburner and Cora Agnes Sine Stoneburner of Readus, VA and is said to have walked the six miles each way to court her. He did not own his own vehicle at the time. Since Elizabeth's parents were not in favor of Elizabeth marrying anyone, Loyal and Elizabeth eloped when they were 21 years old and were married on Columbus Day, October 12, 1935 at the parsonage of the Lutheran Minister in New Market, VA. They came back to live in the Arthur Stoneburner homeplace where their first two children were born prior to moving into their own home at Calvary, just west of Woodstock, VA.

Loyal and Elizabeth were blessed with five children:
Their first daughter, Nancy Lee Miller, died soon after childbirth and they are buried next to her in the Union Forge Cemetery, Edinburg, VA. They had 4 more children, 2 sons and 2 daughters.

Loyal moved his growing family to Front Royal in the early 1940's when he accepted a job at the American Viscose Corporation. There, he served in various capacities including Foreman of Double Deck and later in their new Polyester Plant. He also was active in the development of the Front Royal Credit Union where he served as Treasurer. During this time he attended the University of Wisconsin as training for his Treasurer's position.

The family were members of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Front Royal where among other things he served as Sunday School Director.

He always maintained contact with his numerous relatives. He loved to travel and "loved to see the road run under his car" so he provided his family with many memories of family trips. One trip in particular found the family traveling across the United States not only to view the many points of interest, but also stopping for a brief visit with the Crabill family in Yell County, Arkansas. His Grandmother Margaret Crabill Wotring's brother - Dr. Jonathan Stribling Crabill had settled there at some point following the Spanish American War. There were always trips to Edinburg and Maurertown to visit grandparents on a weekly basis and to visit family in Oakland, Garrett County, MD and WV and to other family relatives in Altoona, PA and elsewhere as well as to the many Wotring reunions.

Loyal cherished his collectiion of old family photos which included many family reunions.

Loyal died suddenly at the age of 56 years old and left a stunned family to mourn his sudden demise. His eldest son, Allen and his wife, Maria had provided him with two grandchildren, Lori and Jeff. The night before his death he had held in his arms his newest born grandchild, Mary when he rode to the Fort Valley Carnival for homemade ice cream with his eldest daughter and her husband. He never lived to see his youngest grandson, Christopher. His youngest daughter and her husband were expecting his fourth grandchild who was not born until 3 months after his death. His wife, Elizabeth survived him by twenty five years.

He, his wife and first born child, Nancy, are buried under the branches of a huge old oak tree in the beautiful pastoral setting of the Union Forge Cemetery, Shenandoah County, near Edinburg, Virginia.
