Joyce Carter, 79, of Amarillo died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Valleyview Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Larry Dunlap, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Texhoma Cemetery, Sherman County, TX, by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Mrs. Carter was born July 15, 1929, one of 11 children, in a dugout in Texas County, Okla., and was raised north of Texhoma. She was a 1947 graduate of Texhoma High School and graduated with a double major from Oklahoma Panhandle A&M College in 1951. She married Orvil Carter on Dec. 26, 1956, in Clayton, N.M. She and Orvil lived in Guymon, Okla., and Perryton, where she taught third grade, until 1962. They moved to Texhoma, where she helped Orvil run a dirt contracting business. They moved to Canadian in 1974 and operated their business there until 1990, when she and Orvil moved to Amarillo to retire. She was a longtime active member of Valleyview Church of the Nazarene.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orvil Carter, in 1992; two sisters, Clara May Thrasher and Mary Jane Clark; and four brothers, Charley Thrasher, Bob Thrasher, Mervin Thrasher and Luther L Thrasher .

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Thomas and husband Jack of Amarillo; a son, Kenneth Carter and wife Karri of Kermit; two granddaughters, Kassi Carter of Houston and Kalie Carter of Kermit; three grandsons, Brian Cappilla, Jason Cappilla and Aaron Cappilla, all of Amarillo; two brothers, Raymond Thrasher of Stratford and Clarence Thrasher of Texhoma; and two sisters, Lois Layton of Ignacio, Colo., and Rosella Flanagan of Texhoma.

The family suggests memorials be to First Christian Church, Texhoma, OK 73949; or a favorite charity.

The family will receive friends after the burial at First Christian Church in Texhoma.
