Peter was one of 20 children born to Bartly D and Ester Adeline Sneed Cole. He married a widow, Nancy Ann "Nannie" Deck Cannaday on 28 March 1906. On 2 February 1907, they had a daughter, Edith May Cole born in Abney, Raleigh County, West Virginia. By the 1910 United States Census, Peter was listed as widowed and was living with his father and brother. He took another wife, Lula between 1920 and 1930, no marriage record was found. Lula and Edith were the only people listed in Peter's will.
