Opal Mildred Altman, 78, of Amarillo died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Coulter Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St., with Bob Miller of South Georgia Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.

Opal was born July 30, 1930, in Rotan to Augusta and Delphia Carpenter. She graduated from Rotan High School in 1947, then moved to McLean shortly thereafter.

She then moved on to Amarillo and went to work for Kraft foods, where she met her husband Jess Altman Jr. They were married in Clovis, N.M.

Mildred was a devoted mother and grandmother, aka "GRAN." She loved watching and taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was very active in watching all the sports her grandchildren were involved in. She really enjoyed watching basketball on TV.

Everyone will miss her good cooking, especially those daily lunch specials she made for her son, Alan. She didn't just cook for two, she would cook a whole feast. Mildred not only loved her family, but she loved everyone she met, and was certainly loved by all that met her. She will be dearly missed!

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Jess Altman.

Survivors include a son, Alan Altman and wife Kim of Amarillo; a daughter, Merita Tabor of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Ashlee and Tabitha Altman, Brooks Tabor and wife Amy and Chelsea Tabor; three great-grandchildren, Camden Tabor, TaLeigh Tabor and Reality Jones; and a brother, Alton Carpenter and wife Annetta of Borger.

The family suggests memorials be to American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.
