ERNST EBERHARDT (d. 1923)

E. EBERHARDT, RESIDENT HERE 70 YEARS, DIES
Well Known Pioneer Passes After A Week’s Illness
One of the oldest pioneer settlers of Manitowoc county passed on today when death claimed Ernest Eberhardt, a resident here for more than 70 years, Mr. Eberhardt having seen practically his entire life in the county since a boy of nine years when he came to American from Germany with his parents. He was 79 at death.

Few men had a wider acquaintance in the county than Mr. Eberhardt who for more than fifty years was one of the prominent farmers of the town of Newton, removing to the city in 1894 where he has since lived a retired life. To older residents of the county the name of Mr. Eberhardt is familiar as one of the most successful men engaged in agricultural pursuits in the county, his success being attested by the accumulation of a competency which provided for him comforts and happiness in his declining years.

Was Ill But One Week
Mr. Eberhardt’s death occurred at the family home at 1027 South Eleventh street at 4 o’clock this morning and was due to pneumonia from which he had suffered only one week, had been in robust health despite his years and his sudden taking away will come as a shock to friends of the family. Mrs. Eberhardt is reported seriously ill and the effect of her husband’s death upon her is feared.

Came Here in 1852.
Born in Germany May 12, 1843(sic), Mr. Eberhardt, who would have been 80 on his next birthday, came to America as a boy of nine, his family settling in the town of Newton where Mr. Eberhardt spent his youth and later followed his father in farming. On November, 11, fifty-eight years ago Mr. Eberhardt was married to Fredricka Knopwurst and the couple celebrated their golden wedding eight years ago.

Besides his wife Mr. Eberhardt is survived by four children John, of Newton, Mrs. Louis Raether, Misses Anne and Gustie at home. There are eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren surviving.

The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the German Lutheran church, the Rev. Karl Machmiller officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery.
