James "Jim" McCampbell Atchley served as a corporal with Co. H, 3rd Tennessee Cavalry (Union). He was captured Sept. 24, 1864 at Sulphur Branch Trestle, AL and held at Camp Morgan prison camp at Cahaba, AL. Released in April 1865, he was sent to a parole camp near Vicksburg, MS. He was to be scheduled to be transported on the "Sultana" to Camp Chase, Ohio for release but became sick and was transferred instead to the McPherson Gen. Hospital in Vicksburg. At approx. 2:00 AM on April 27, 1865, when the Sultana was 7 miles north of Memphis, TN, the boilers of the steam ship Sultana blew up. Of the 2,137 persons aboard, 1,547 died including most of the 3rd TN Cavalry of which only 68 survived. James recovered in Vicksburg and eventually made his way to Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio, and was discharged 6/24/1865.
