Ernest was the eighth of ten children. On May 18, 1932 he married Antoinette Billings at Nanticoke, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Charles Horton, Alderman, performed the marriage. They were remarried on April 3, 1939 at Saint Francis Catholic Church, Nanticoke, and that service was performed by Rev. John F. O'Malley. The couple raised three daughters: Mary, Bessie, and Elizabeth Antoinette. He worked as a laborer in the coal mines.
