"approximately 400 people inside the fort [Ft Mims, 1813 at the time of the massacre]. Among the defenders were roughly 100 enlisted men of the Volunteers, nearly of all English descent and lately immigrated to Mississippi Territory from Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia in search of opportunities on the American frontier.
