MORRICE -- Helen E Ogden, Former Director of Nurses at Owosso Memorial Hospital, died Wednesday morning at the Provincial House West in Lansing. Ms. Ogden was 78. Ms. Ogden had been ill for the past nine-months. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 pm at the Perry United Methodist church, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
Ms. Ogden was born March 5, 1897 in Scotia Township, daughter of Henry and Mary (Kline) Ogden. She graduated from Perry High School in 1914 and from Michigan State Normal College in 1917. Ms. Ogden was a teacher in the Owosso school system between 1923 and 1925 when she entered the Owosso Memorial Hospital Training School from which she graduated in 1929.
Ms. Ogden retired August 31, 1965 as Director of Nurses at Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Perry United Methodist Church, the Owosso Zonta Club, the Shiawassee District Association of Nurses, the Michigan Nurses Association and the National Nurses Association.
Surviving Ms. Ogden are: a brother Carl F Ogden of Lansing; a sister Ruth Crumback of Morrice; nieces and nephews grand nieces and grand nephews.
Nursing was a way of life for Ms. Ogden, "I do feel rather guilty living" she said of her retirement in 1965 as director of Nurses, "especially when there is such a need for Nurses. However, she remained on the job at the request of the administration for two extra years. This was because of the expansion plans that were underway at the hospital at the time.
To see this out, when she retired, she bought three new uniforms and a pair of new shoes just in case she was needed again. During her years as a Nurse, Ms. Ogden saw many changes. She watched the rise of the hem of the nurses uniform "from ankle length to almost above the knee." She took part in the change from the long hours, to 30 on private duty, 12 on night duty and split shift during the day, to 8 hour tours.
Ms. Ogden who became Director of Nurses in 1946, is also credited with helping to establish the Red Cross Chapter in Owosso when she taught Red Cross home nursing classes during WWII.
Summing up her attitude towards her career in 1965, Ms. Ogden said "nursing is an enticing profession and I have loved it all my life. I have no hobbies, outside of gardening; my work is my hobby."
