When John Robert Clark was one year's old, in 1881, Maria Stacey-Clark was alone on the farm in Deckerville (Sanilac County). There was a forest fire and Maria lowered herself and John Robert into a well to be safe from the fire. The smoke was terrible but the house was spared.
Maria lost three sons to diphtheria in a two year period. During one of these times she had to call son John Robert home to help bury one of his brothers as her husband was not home. All three are buried in the Croswell Cemetery.
Maria must have been a very strong woman and was also very beautiful.
Source from Olive "Irene" Clark-McNulty - Maria may have been married prior to her marriage to Moses Clark. There was a teacher listed as Maria Allen in the Croswell school records and there is a child buried in the Croswell Cemetery near the Clark's with the name Alice Allen.
