Services for JR Barker, 84, of Neches will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bailey and Foster Chapel with Dan Manuel and Steve Handley officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Park under the direction of Bailey and Foster Funeral Home, Palestine. Mr. Barker died Saturday at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. He was born July 19, 1924 in Muleshoe to Oscar Whit and Berta May Whatley Barker. Mr. Barker was a member of the Crockett Road Church of Christ. He graduated from Rice University in 1949. JR accepted a position as professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education at Rice University and retired after 37 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy.Mr. Barker was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sammie Jo Dunnam Barker; a son, Joseph Ashley Barker; and two sisters, Frances Bird and Bobbie Wyatt. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Ethel Rae Beard Barker of Neches; daughter, Misty Anne Nunn of Manville; stepdaughters, Rae Roberson and husband Lamar and Kathleen Compton and husband Ed; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.Pallbearers will be J.B. Matlock, Mark Johnson, Bennie Howard, Dale Sparks, Bob Stech and Terry Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be J.C. Parkman, Johnny Anders, Ed Lowe and Bernie Baur.Condolence calls will be received from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday before the service at Bailey and Foster Funeral Home, Palestine.
