Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2008 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home - Stein Chapel in Long Prairie for Lena L. Gunkel, 87 who died Wednesday at Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home. Rev. Andrew Brown will officiate and burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Friends may call one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home in Long Prairie. Lena was born in Hewitt Township, Todd County, Minnesota to John & Mabel (Irons) Buchholz. She married Russel L. Gunkel on June 7, 1946 at Union Corners Church in Deer Creek, Minnesota. The couple lived in Ottertail and then moved to South St. Paul where she lived most of her life until moving to Long Prairie in 2004. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church in Inver Grove Heights for many years. Survivors include her children, Ann (Clarence) Grimli of Burtrum and Gary Gunkel of Minneapolis; four grandchildren, Kristy Brown of Plymouth, Kirt Grimli of Burtrum, Nathan Gunkel and Kevin Gunkel both of Minneapolis; half brother, Biram Eckman of Ottertail. Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband Russel; brother, Raymond Buchholz; sister, Dorothy Buchholz; half brothers, Alvin Eckman, Paul Eckman; and half sister, Eileen Kruger.
