Her death certificate indicates she was the daughter of Jasper and Nancy Jane (Pierce) Bryant. She was married to Luther Mitchell. He preceded her in death.

On July 19, 1870, Sarah was listed in the census as a 6 year old child of Jasper and Nancy. In 1880, she was listed as age 16. In both cases, the family was in the White Oak District of Adair County.

In 1900, she was not listed by name. There was simply a line drawn underneath her husband's entry and then the details competed. They were living in Columbia. Her husband was listed as Martin L Mitchell, head, born Dec 1843 in Kentucky, age 56, Married for 4 years, farmer. She was listed as —— wife, born June 1864, age 34, Married for 4 years. No children were born to the couple.

In 1910, the couple was in west Columbia. They had been married for 15 years. They were listed as: Martin L, head, age 67, third marriage, born Kentucky, farmer and Sarah, wife, age 45, first marriage, 1 child and living, born Kentucky. Even though the census indicates she had a living child, no one else was listed as living with the couple.

In 1920, they were still in west Columbia. In the census, they were recorded as Luther, age 76, and Sarah, age 54. The census was taken in January. No children were listed.

By 1930, Sarah was widowed and listed alone in the census in District 2, Adair County. She was listed as age 64 with her occupation as manager of a farm.
