On December 10, 1938, he married the former Edris Bean, who preceded him in death December 23, 2007. Other than his parents and wife he was preceded in death by, sisters, Vallie Kimble, Delva Bullard, Elma Roach, Maylene Roberts, Hazel Bean and a brother, George Birdwell. He received a BS degree from Tennessee Tech and was a teacher in Macon and Clay County for 40 years. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ.
