The son of Irish-born Hawthorn & Pennsylvania-born Lydia Freeland, he was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He married Eliza McJimsey Darrah October 18, 1854, in Hartsville presumably in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Katherine (b. 08/21/55 - married James Edwin Reid). In 1860, he was a doctor living with his parents and siblings in East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but without Eliza and Katherine. He is in the 1863-65 draft registration still residing there.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-five in Harrisburg September 17, 1862, mustered into federal service that day as assistant surgeon for the 61st Pennsylvania Infantry, but submitted his resignation effective January 11, 1863. The 1863-65 draft registration claims he was discharged by surgeon's certificate.
Sometime after the war, he gave up his medical career to operate a railroad station, which had been his father's occupation.
