Estel left Virginia when he was 17. He first went to West Virginia and worked in a coal mine, but that did not suit him. By 1900 he was in Bridgeport, Indiana working as a farm hand.

Later, he and his brother, Jesse, later worked in a dairy in Aberdeen, Washington. By 1907-8 he was in Stockton, California.

His brother Jesse started a bakery in Alameda, California and Estel also worked there, the family living in Alameda. By 1928 they were in Stockton, California where they worked as bakers at Gravem-Inglis.

From there they worked in their brother Jeff's bakery in Stockton, Webb's Bakery.
