Col. Albert W. Burch, since 1919 business manager of The Charlotte Observer, died at his home, 2100 East Seventh street, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. He was 63 years old.

Hardening of the arteries caused the death, according to his physician. Colonel Burch had been in poor health since last spring and in recent months was unable to be at his office.

The funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon at the residence. Dr. G. F. Bell, pastor of Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian church, of which Colonel Burch was a member, will be in charge. Burial will be at Elmwood cemetery.

Pallbearers will be W. J. Edwards, J. C. Patton, E. R. Preston, John Paul Lucas, C. O. Kuester and Curtis B. Johnson.

The board of directors and many members of the Charlotte Totary club, of which Colonel Burch was a leading member, are expected to attend the funeral. The directors will attend in a body. At the luncheon of the club yesterday, after President Thomson had announced the death, the members stood for a minute in silence in honor of his memory and Rev. George Floyd Rogers, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal church, paid a beautiful tribute to his life as he had known it during the past few years.

A member of the North Carolina Press association, Colonel Burch held the friendship of practically every newspaper man in the state. At one time he was vice president of that organization and took a leading part in its activities.

Native of Virginia.
Albert Waterman Burch was born in 1861, near Fredericksburg, Va., his father, a planter, bearing the same name. At the age of 20 he entered business life at Buffalo, N. Y., where in 1889 he married Miss Anna Ferris, a daughter of Judge Ferris of that city, and one of the first women lawyers of the country. Shortly after his marriage Mr. Burch went to Honduras to take charge of concessions granted by that Central American republic to the Nicaragua Fruit & Coffee company, in which Mr. Burch had become interested. He remained in Central America nine years, and had a wealth of varied experiences.

Mr. Burch returned to the United States about 1900 and located at Rome, N. Y., becoming advertising manager of The Rome Sentinel. In 1904 he resigned that position to come to Charlotte as advertising manager of The Charlotte News. He left the newspaper field in 1913 and engaged in the real estate business here for two years. In 1915 he accepted the position of advertising manager of The Charlotte Observer and in 1919 was made business manager of the paper, about the same time acquiring a financial interest in the company.

Mr. Burch was married July 2, 1908, to Miss Freda Dotger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Dotger of this city, his first wife having died in 1906. Mrs. Burch, with two daughters, Florence, aged 14, and Bertha, age 10, survive. Mr. Burch is survived also by one son by his first marriage, this son being Ferris Burch who is now a resident of Greenville, S. C.

It is said that no man in Charlotte, perhaps, could boast a larger number of genuine friends than Mr. Burch. His delightful personality, genial disposition, and courtly manner, attracted men to him, and his sincerity and wholesome camaraderie held them fast. He loved people, and his affection and concern for others was warmly reciprocated by those with whom he came in contact. He particularly liked young people and was always a popular member of any group of young people with whom he found himself. He was a delightful conversationalist on all occasions, having ready wit, an attractive manner, and a wide and rich experience in travel, literature and business. He was not a college man, but he possessed an exceptional degree of scholarship. His reading from youth had covered a wide variety of subjects and his splendid mentality enabled him to readily assimilate and classify what he read. As charming as was his personality, however, as striking his manner and appearance, and as versatile as were his accomplishments, the outstanding characteristic of the man was his genuine humanness, his keen understanding of and broad sympathy for his fellow man.
