James was born about 1838 near Fort Wayne in Allen County, Indiana. He was one of several children born to Eleazer Boyles (also known as Ezra) and Catherine Luckey Boyles.

In April, 1858, he moved with his father, brother Elias and nephew, John Boyles to Marshall County, Kansas near where the town of Vermillion now stands. His mother, sister Amy, and Amy's husband Joe perished on the journey to what was to be their new home.

By 1860, the Boyles had relocated once again to Pawnee City, Nebraska. Here they lived with his step-mother, Mary Hudson Catlin, and her children. Even though there were 7 people living in the house, there was always room for more as Mary was known for offering room and board to travelers through the area.

Some time after moving to Pawnee City, James met and married Malinda Perkins. Together, they had a son, William.

Besides serving in the unit mentioned on his GAR marker (Co. C possibly G, 2nd Kansas Cavalry) in 1862, James also served in two other Civil War units. They are Co.F, 9th Kansas Infantry in 1861 and Co. C, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry in late 1862.

His Civil War service was not kind to him, and he was later discharged for disability. In the words of his sister-in-law, Susan Perkins Dewey: "he had poor doctors and they gave him medicine that threw him into fits, and he had fits which later killed him." James succumbed to his "fits" on March 24, 1869 at about the age of 31 leaving his wife Malinda and son William.
