Services for Mrs. Ethel L. Abney, 83, widow of the late Paul Abney, of 813 Desert Willow, Lufkin, will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday in the Gipson Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in the Glendale Cemetery. Dr. Jack Shoultz will officiate.


Mrs. Abney was born in Coffeyville, Texas and had resided in Lufkin since 1922. She served as librarian in Lufkin public schools for 30 years, and also as librarian at St. Cyprian's School and the First United Methodist Church of Lufkin. She was a dedicated and loving teacher for 51 years She was also instrumental in organizing the Lufkin Girl Scouts and was a charter member of the Lufkin Music Club.


Mrs. Abney was a graduate of Gilmer High School and received her Bachelor's Degree in Library Science from North Texas University. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lufkin.


Survivors include a sister, Mrs. James A. Abney; sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Enoch Fletcher; brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. John K. Latimer; sister-in-law, Mrs. Emile Latimer.
