John Ackerson was born around 1840 in New York, but by 1861 was a resident of Orange Co., IN. On Sept. 18th of that year, Ackerson enlisted as musician in Company I, 38th Indiana Infantry. On a company muster roll dated Oct. 1, 1862 he is listed "sick" at a Louisville military hospital. Ackerson transferred as a SGT to Co. K of the 1st Mississippi Marine Brigade Regiment in 1863.

John applied for a veteran's invalid pension on Sept. 17, 1891 as a resident of KY (app. #1,056,854; cert. #715,339), nearly thirty years to the day he first enlisted in the Thirty-eighth Indiana. He is also enumerated as a resident of Ward 12, Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY in the 1900 & 1910 U.S. Censuses. He passed away on March 25, 1912. John's widow Emma (b. @1861) applied for a gov't. pension on May 2, 1912 in KY (app. #985,660).
