Glenn Maharg Christy of Chapin Road, formerly of Butler County, passed away on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at 1:07 a.m. in Jameson Memorial Hospital following an illness. He was born on the Christy family farm, established before 1865, near North Washington in Parker Township, Butler County, on May 3, 1923, and was a son of the late Claude Franklin and Sara Mae Maharg Christy.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Castle and was a graduate of the Karns City High School class of 1942. While in high school he played all sports, the French horn in the band, starred in the senior play and was president of his graduating class. Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the 155th Air Wing during World War II in the South Pacific, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was employed as a truck driver and was a member of the Teamster's Union; was an oil and gas producer in Butler County; and owned the former Central Western Pennsylvania Coal Co., mining in northern Butler County.

He married the former Mary Elizabeth Robertson on Nov. 21, 1946, in Butler, and she survives, along with four daughters, Patricia Lee Christy of New Castle, Sara Elizabeth Barna of South Park, Pa., Kathleen Christy and her husband, the Rev. Thomas Gilliland, of Maryville, Tn., and Cecelia Mary Christy and Mark Riccardi of Pittsburgh; five sons, William Glenn Christy and his wife, Nancy, of St. Louis, Stephen Gerald Christy and his wife, Margo, of Ellport, Matthew Robertson Christy of New Castle, Mark Timothy Christy of Latham, N.Y., and Shaun Claude Christy and his wife, Pamela, of New Castle; a brother, Franklin Claude Christy and his wife, Ruth, of Warren, Pa.; a sister, Louie Weldon of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death, along with his father in 1977 and his mother in 1971; were one great-grandson, Tyler Christy on Jan. 11, 2006; one brother, William Samuel Christy; and two sisters, Jenny Rose Hayes in 1989 and Frances Cline on Sept. 28, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, Petrolia, Pa., on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dennis Blauser, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church, and the Rev.
