John Marion "J.M." Casteel, 83, of Englewood, died late Tuesday night, Jan. 4, 2005, at his residence.

A native and resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a son of the late Larkin and Rossie Gay Casteel. He was a member of Englewood Christian Church and was baptized April 6, 1952. He was also a member of Manilla Masonic Lodge No. 633, was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was retired from TVA and was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Worley Casteel ; one son, Rodney Preston Casteel; and one sister, Ruth Burger.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Marian and John Hale of Englewood; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Laura Casteel of Riceville; nine grandchildren, Heather and Chris Walker, Josh and Alicia Hale, Lori and Burt Newman, Larkin Casteel, Seth Summer and Brandy Casteel; five sisters, Zella Mae Patton and Sarah Martin, both of Englewood, Marie Harris of Chattanooga, Vivian McConnell of Cleveland, and Alice Partain of Athens; four brothers, Kenneth Casteel of Englewood, Sherman Casteel of Madisonville, Leonard Casteel of Englewood, and Robert Casteel of Athens; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; one special nephew, Caleb Martin; and special friends and caretakers, Elsie Gentry, Charlie Pickel, JoAnn Johnson, Judy Caldwell, Mary Stiles and Geraldine Martin.

A Masonic service will be 8 p.m. Thursday in the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the funeral service immediately following. Ministers Ron Blevins and Bob Kirksey will officiate. Burial will be 4 p.m. Friday in McMinn Memory Gardens and will conclude with full military rites.

Pallbearers will be Larry Casteel, Keith Martin, Kelly Casteel, Mike Nichols, Gene Casteel, Steve Casteel, Allen Casteel, Bob Webb, Rick Holden, Bob Kirksey and Stan McConkey.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Englewood Christian Church.
