Vernard David Sojourner 78 died at 3:20 am Sunday January 11 in the DeSoto General Hospital after a four day illness.
A retired farmer he was born at Longstreet Nov 5 1880 and had lived out his life in DeSoto Parish and Shelby County. He married Mrs Emma Register Morris in 1912. They had no children. Mr Doc, as he was better known, had been a member of the Bethel Methodist Church for forty-five years. He often walked the three miles from his home to the church to attend services even in this last year.
Funeral services were held at the Bethel Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 2:30 with the pastor the Rev. Bill Holt and the Rev. J. B. Grambling, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Logansport, officiating.
Interment was in Bethel Cemetery under the direction of the Caraway Funeral Home Pallbearers were: J. E. Sojourner, Charles Sojourner, Jack Wheless, Beauford Sojourner, Jimmy Wheless and Huson Register.
Survivors: three nephews, J. E. Sojourner of Logansport, Buford and Marvin Sojourner of Houston; two nieces, Mrs Lizzie Hinton of Joaquin and Mrs Beulah Pigg of Mississippi; two stepsons, O.L. Morris of New Orleans; seven step-grandchildren and a host of step-nieces and nephews.
Out of town attendants at the funeral included: Elzie Morris of New Orleans; Mr. and Mrs. Beauford Sojourner and baby and Mrs Marvin Sojourner of Houston; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hinton and daughter and E. Walker of Joaquin; Mr. and Mrs. McSwain and daughter and Mrs. Jack Sojourner of Center; Mr. and Mrs. Williamson, Mrs. Doren Woodrow Dolittle, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Register and Laverne and Mrs. Donald Goslin and children, all of Shreveport; J.R. Roberts, Grand Cane.
