George Rufus Lyon enlisted 6 Aug 1862 into the 21st Michigan infantry with his brother William A. Lyon. George Lyon died in the military hospital of disease. He was buried in the Cave Hill National Cemetery in Louisville. His father, William B. Lyon received a pension based on George Lyon's service and death. A younger son born to William B. Lyon and his second wife was also named George Rufus Lyon in honor of the elder son whom they lost in the Civil War.
