Corp. Newton A Baker joined the Union Army, 1st Reg., WV Light Artillery, Battery B, on October 1st, 1861, in Ceredo, WV. He was killed July 18, 1864, when a limber chest, upon which he was riding, exploded while on the march to Winchester through Loudoun Valley, VA, near Ashby's Gap, under the command of Brig. General Duffie.
He left his wife Mary, and three children; John Henry Baker, Elizabeth "Ella" Baker and Newton Joseph Baker.
It was always told by our family that he was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery. His grave plot has not been verified. We have been told he could possibly be in a mass burial plot of the Unknown Soldiers. The tombstone picture submitted has not been verified to be his.

Our g-grandfather, Newton A Baker, was born in Monroe County, WV, the son of Henry A Baker and Rebecca Arnot Robinson. He was married to Mary Frances Hively on Dec 20, 1857 in Gallia Co OH.
