Samuel is the son of John Finley Sr. DD and Esther (Alexander) Crowe. His father added the "e" to the end of their surname for reasons unknown.Grandson of STG. Benjamin and Ann (Gregg/Gragg) Crow.

His dad was a well educated man, going to many schools one being, Princeton Theological Seminary. After going to Kentucky in 1815 he founded a Academy-school in Shelbyville, Shelby County and was pastor of 2 rural churches (Fox Run and Bull Skin) near Shelbyville, Kentucky. Samuel was born 4 years after his dad started the Academy, being their 4th child.

In 1823 the family move to Hanover, where he was, I am guessing a normal boy, but who had plenty of schooling. (His father is the founder of Hanover College).

At one point he has a serious illness as a boy, but survived. When in college he quit for a year to teach school, but did graduate later at the age of 20, as a Lawyer, in 1840.

1840 - April 14, he was united in marriage with Maryann Fouts/Fontz. To this union a son and daughter were born before her death February 14, 1846. Unknown where she is laid to rest.

1849 - February 1, he married Amanda M. Warnell. To this union there are 6 known children, 2 daughters and 4 sons.

1850 census they are in Lexington, Scott, Indiana, with his two children and their new daughter Martha Caroline. He is listed as being a clerk in a law office.

1860 census they are still in Lexington. With the family larger, 2 sons and a daughter have been added. Sadly Martha Caroline had died at about 18 months old. Unknown where she is laid to rest.

1862-August 19, he entered the Union Army as a Captain of Company "B", 93rd Indiana Infantry. His family remained in Lexington, Scott, Indiana.

1863-Septmeber 21, he is promoted to Major.

1865-August 10, he is mustered out of the Army as a LT. Colonel while in Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee.

During the Civil War he was dealing with bad conditions and weather. For years after, his health was impaired by exposure from it all.

1870 they are still listed in Lexington, he is now listed as a Lawyer, and two more sons had been born to them.

1880 they are still in Lexington, It is said by some family history that he was Chief of Government Surveys - to Nebraska.

1882 he is in Palestine, Anderson, Texas, where he passed away at age 64. Samuel Jr. brought him home for burial in the family church cemetery being Hanover Cemetery.

Two of his sons Samuel Jr. and Orin Thomas Crowe, had been in Texas at least 2 years (listed in 1880 census as farmhands). I do not know if he was visiting them, or had moved. It is unclear if Amanda was with him in Texas or had already passed. Many with family trees say she died in Eureka, Humboldt, California on August 17, 1909. Though some of her sons are in that area in 1900, she is not living with any of them, unless her one living daughter (who I am unable to find married name of) had her living with her and was living there also. I never have found Amanda anywhere in the 1900 census. I have no true knowledge, of when she passed or where.
